[en]In refuge at Shanti in Zanoni Alto (GE), a place I call home, almost right after the last day of work. After the decision to cut away almost all ties in Italy, not wanting to continue no longer with the way of life that has been lead for 6 years, I felt the need for these 3 weeks of absolute mountain life with those 3 souls that know only how to spoil me. I don’t know if the emotional passages for all those who decides to take time off are the same. The start of that ‘stop’ is a complete blur. I have no idea what I’m doing, and am concentrating only on this folly of a trip down under and weighing options for what comes after.

I had a few things to do away from Milan including going to Rome for the renewal of my passport and visiting Florence to catch up on old friends, thought also of visiting eventually another friend in Salerno.

It has been months since Red and I have been idealizing to get an original 500 and after accepting the fact that the projected final cost would really become absurd, we moved had started to look for other cars that would be easily maintained from Toyotas to Renaults, different cars from houses that had worldwide distribution for vaster range of services. Red’s researches least to considerations for a Toyota Cressida ’86 in Trieste to a Suzuki Maruti ’92 in Bologna then Citroens, the list goes on.

Red came to visit the second weekend of my stay. What I though to be also a relaxing visit at Shanti actually start of our adventure. We found our car, a black Fiat 500 Young in Lavagna with starting price of € 300,- The car is a 1996 issue with 42.020 km. Almost unused considering how old the car is. We then managed to lower the price to € 200,- seeing as some revisions needed to be made to the motor.

It is during our stay at Shanti that the project for this trip down under started to not only take first steps but also epic proportions. It came to mind to not only make the trip but to also take something from Italy along with us to share along the way. And while our dear Fillippo cooks up a plate of pasta with freshly made pesto, arrived the idea to also implement the exchange of culture through meals. Our 500 could become that Pestomobile that would drive through 17 countries through land and seas carrying that savory splendor in base of basil, pine nuts, garlic and good olive oil.

It seemed all fantasy but Shanti was in line with the idea to promote local specialties and we were just simmering the initial concept when just so happen the owner of the 500, Roberta, actually works with the local TV and knows a few producers. To christen the Pestomobile, since Simon had time, we decided to go down south, before going down under, with the car for an eventual blessing in Pagani at the procession on the Madonna delle Galline, where Serena was awaiting both of us.
