Running to Jakarta…

Red occupies the task of preparing the vehicle both mechanically and in a bureaucratic level. And we are both, from different sides of the globe, also trying to gather general information on how to cross the frontiers of each country and daily draws a line for an approximate route, both on-land and by-sea. Up to now the route has yet to be decided upon due to numerous obstacles. Each day a new problem presents itself and the search for solutions, pushes us to desire nothing more than to accomplish this voyage that most deem an impossibility.

Ever since the purchase of the 500, I have initiated the visa run for the countries that we will pass namely Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, China, Laos, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, and the last stop for me is New Zealand without Red. Out of these 18 countries, I need visas for 13 of them and up to now I’ve received 4, paying a total sum of €840,- for visa rights, services, documents and additional costs.

I am now leaving for Indonesia to make 4 visas in 3 weeks time and hoping to insert a 5^th . It will be easier and above all cheaper processing everything back home.

Red is starting his visa requests today, he will need 5 visas and all will be ready in 4 weeks time.

The parting date has been moved from June 14. This change is a huge stress on us because we were both emotionally ready to leave on April 8 when the car was purchased. However, the postponing of the date was needed for preparations on both sides.

To add up to possible dangers of countries falling politically into pieces. A more direct obstacle is actually finding a way to arrive to Australia overcoming land and sea.

With Myanmar closed to foreigners that want to travel en route, our main challenge is to drive into China and exit into SE Asia. Red has been pulling his hair out with research that lead to almost nowhere, since results show contradicting information. It is fact that a foreigner may drive in China with a Chinese Drivers License and with a car that is matriculated in China, but how to get these documents on the border is not explained anywhere. Furthermore, since from Nepal it is impossible to enter with a car to Tibet and India/China borders are closed for tourists, the only entry closest to our route is Pakistan through the Karakoram Highway. It is a beautiful road which has entered into our heads. To enter both Xinjiang which is the independent region of China that borders Pakistan, we will also need a Permit of Entry aside from the Chinese visa. This is the same for the next neighboring independent region of Tibet. Most internet searches lead to travel agencies that offer services to assist on acquiring these documents and they all cost a fortune. Some research mention that it is possible to do temporary documents at the border which needs to be upgrade upon arrival a the Region’s Capital, Urumqi. However, we’ve found no contact of the bureau that handles the administration of the temporary documents at the frontier.

Plan B is to ship the car and ourselves via cargo from India to Thailand or Malaysia which is nonetheless costly.

We are running out of time and have no clear information but our hearts grow more and more concentrated on the inevitable start to this adventure.
